Free resume templates: 100 ATS-friendly designs and how to pick the right one

A template decides two things before anyone reads a word: whether the ATS can parse your resume, and whether the recruiter's first impression is "organised" or "cluttered". This page tells you how to choose by industry, seniority and ATS risk, then walks through a curated set of the 100 designs in the get-resume.com builder, each with a direct link that opens it pre-filled with a sample profile so you can judge it in seconds.

Every template is free to open, fill and edit. Switch designs any time without losing your text.Browse 100 free templates →

How to choose a resume template

Ignore "which one looks best". Ask three questions in order and the choice narrows itself.

1. Who reads it first: software or a person?

If you apply through a portal (Naukri, LinkedIn Easy Apply, a company careers page, a campus placement system), an applicant tracking system reads the file before any human does. Most large Indian employers, including the IT services majors, banks and consulting firms, work this way. That means single column, standard section names, no text boxes, no icons standing in for words, and contact details in the body rather than the page header. The ATS resume guide explains why each of those matters.

If the first reader is a person (you are emailing a hiring manager, a referral is forwarding your file, or it is a small company without an ATS), you have more room: a second column, a colour accent, a sidebar for skills. Both cases are covered by the directory below, and the risk column tells you which is which.

2. What does your industry expect?

3. How senior are you?

Freshers need Education above Experience, room for projects, and no empty "Experience" heading that draws attention to what is missing; the fresher resume format guide covers the ordering. Mid-career candidates need Experience first and a summary that carries results. Senior candidates (10+ years, managers, directors) need a two-page layout with a leadership summary and selected achievements at the top, which is what the Executive template is built for.

Each link opens that design in the builder, pre-filled with a sample profile for its typical role. Replace the sample with your own details, or use the AI to write the bullets from your job history. ATS risk is rated Low (single column, plain headings), Medium (two columns or heavy styling that modern parsers handle but older ones may not) or Human-first (designed for a person to read; use for emailed applications and portfolios).

Colour and photo guidance for India

Colour. One accent colour, used for headings or a single rule, is safe everywhere. Full-width colour blocks, dark sidebars and gradients are fine on screen but print badly on office laser printers and can reduce contrast for older parsers. If the resume might be printed at a walk-in or a campus drive, choose a template whose colour is confined to text and thin lines. Banking, government and legal applications should be black on white.

Photo. The default for corporate India is no photo. Recruiters at IT companies, banks and consultancies do not expect one, ATS parsers either ignore it or misread it as a graphic, and it introduces bias you do not control. Add a photo only when the employer explicitly asks, or for roles where appearance is part of the job description (front-office hospitality, aviation cabin crew, on-camera roles). Applications to the Gulf sometimes request one; European and North American ones almost never do, and the Globe template omits it for that reason. Passport-size photos on a "biodata" are a separate tradition covered in the biodata format guide.

Personal details. Date of birth, father's name, marital status, religion and nationality belong on a government form or a biodata, not a corporate resume. The Federal template keeps a details block for the postings that require it; every other template here leaves it out.

How the free plan works

This is stated plainly so there is no surprise at download time.

If you only need the words and plan to lay them out yourself, the free plan gives you that in full. If you want the designed PDF without the watermark, Pro is the price of one month of most OTT subscriptions and can be switched off after your job search ends.

Frequently asked questions

Are the resume templates really free?

Yes. You can open any of the 100 templates, fill it in, use the AI to write bullets, edit as much as you like and copy the text out, all without paying or entering a card. The PDF download carries a small get-resume.com watermark on the free plan. Pro at ₹599 per month removes the watermark and can be cancelled any time.

Which resume template is best for freshers in India?

A single-column template with a clear headline and an Education block above Experience: Atlas, Slate or Quartz are the safest picks. Avoid two-column and photo templates for campus placements and mass-recruiter applications, where the resume goes through an ATS and a screener who wants to find your degree and CGPA in two seconds.

Are two-column resume templates ATS-friendly?

Modern ATS parsers handle two columns better than they used to, but some still read across the page and jumble the sidebar with the main text. If the job is at a large IT services firm, a bank or a PSU, use a single column. If you are emailing a hiring manager or applying to a design or marketing role where the human reads first, two columns are fine.

Should I put a photo on my resume in India?

Not by default. Corporate and IT recruiters in India do not expect one, ATS parsers ignore or mangle it, and it can introduce bias. Add a photo only when the employer asks for it, or for roles where appearance is part of the job, such as front-office hospitality, aviation and modelling. Government forms that require a photo usually want it on the application, not the resume.

Can I download the template as a Word file?

The builder exports PDF, which is what almost every Indian job portal and employer asks for. If a recruiter specifically requests a .docx, copy the text from the builder into a plain Word layout — the resume format in Word guide shows how to keep it ATS-safe.

Can I switch templates after I have filled in my details?

Yes. Your content is stored separately from the design, so you can switch between any of the 100 templates and your text, bullets and sections carry over. This is the easiest way to keep one master resume and send a conservative version to a bank and a modern version to a startup.

How do I know if my chosen template passes the ATS?

Run the finished PDF through the free ATS score checker on get-resume.com. It reports whether the sections were detected, whether contact details parsed, and which keywords from the job description are missing. If a section is missing from the parse, switch to a single-column template and check again.
