Accountant Resume: Sample, Format and Skills for India (2026)

Accounting resumes in India fail for a boring reason: they list duties ("handled accounts payable, GST filing, bank reconciliation") instead of outcomes. This guide shows how to write one that a CA-firm partner or a manufacturing company's finance head will shortlist, with a full senior accountant sample, a keyword table, and how to present B.Com, CA-Inter, CA and CMA paths.

What recruiters look for in an accountant resume

Three people read an accountant's resume. The HR screener or ATS wants keywords matching the job post: software (Tally Prime, SAP FICO, Zoho Books), compliance areas (GST, TDS, PF/ESI) and qualification (B.Com, CA-Inter, CMA). The hiring manager, usually a finance controller or CA, wants proof that you close books on time and that auditors do not find what you missed. The SME owner wants to know whether you will save money and keep them out of notices.

So your resume must carry the right nouns for the screener, numbers for the manager, and a headline that tells the owner who you are in one line: "Senior Accountant · CA-Inter · 5 yrs in manufacturing · Tally Prime, SAP B1, GST & TDS compliance". See resume headline examples for more patterns; on job portals the Naukri headline is a separate field that deserves its own line.

Section order: contact line, headline, 3-line summary, core skills, experience (reverse-chronological), education and professional qualification, certifications. Freshers flip experience and education. If the overall structure is new to you, read how to write a resume first; and a company resume is not the "biodata" many families still talk about (see biodata vs resume).

Skills section: Tally, SAP, Zoho, GST, TDS, Ind AS

Group skills by type and never write a bare tool name. "SAP" tells a recruiter nothing; "SAP FICO (end-user): GL, AP/AR, asset accounting, MIRO/MIGO" tells them you have sat in front of it.

Ind AS deserves a note. If you have only studied it for CA-Inter, write "Ind AS (academic)" or leave it in Education. If you have actually prepared Ind AS-compliant schedules or worked on a listed company's consolidation, it belongs in a bullet, not just the skills line. The same applies to IFRS and US GAAP, which MNC captive finance centres in Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad ask for.

Software skills are checked. Manufacturing companies and CA firms routinely give a Tally or Excel test on interview day. List what you can do on the spot.

B.Com, CA-Inter, CA, CMA: how to present your qualification

Indian accounting has several entry routes, and each needs a different line on the resume.

PathHow to write itWhat to emphasise in bullets
B.Com / M.Com only"B.Com (Accounting & Finance) — Gujarat University, 2021 — 68%". Add Tally/GST certifications below.Software fluency, volume handled (invoices per month, ledgers reconciled), accuracy, filing deadlines met.
CA-Inter (one or both groups)"CA Intermediate — ICAI — Group I & II cleared, Nov 2020". Never write "CA (pursuing)" without the stage.Articleship work: audits led, tax returns filed, client size. Show that you can work unsupervised.
Qualified CA"Chartered Accountant — ICAI — May 2023 (membership no. on request)". Put "CA" before your name in the header.Ownership: closes, audits signed off, tax positions taken, team reviewed, systems implemented.
CMA (ICMAI)"CMA — Institute of Cost Accountants of India — Dec 2022". Industry roles value it for costing and MIS.Product costing, variance analysis, budgeting, cost audit support, inventory valuation.
CA dropout with articleship done"CA Intermediate (Group I) — ICAI" plus articleship as a full experience entry. The articleship itself. Three years of audit work beats a fresh B.Com by a distance; do not undersell it.

Articleship on a resume

Articleship is work experience. Put it under Experience with the firm name, "Article Assistant", the dates and 3–4 bullets naming the work: statutory audits with client turnover ranges, tax audits under Section 44AB, GST and income-tax returns, stock and concurrent audits for banks. Say how many engagements you handled and whether you led any as senior article. A single line, "Completed 3-year articleship", buried under Education throws away your strongest content.

Fresher vs senior accountant vs finance manager

The same person's resume should look different at each stage, because the reader's question changes.

Fresher / Accounts Executive (0–2 yrs)Senior Accountant (3–7 yrs)Finance Manager / Controller (7+ yrs)
Reader's questionCan this person do entries accurately and learn our system? Can this person own the close and handle auditors? Can this person run the function and advise the business?
Lead sectionEducation, then certifications, then internships / articleshipExperience with quantified bulletsSummary with scope (team size, turnover, entities), then experience
Bullet focusVolume, accuracy, tools, deadlinesClosing days, audit findings, recoveries, process fixesWorking capital, cost savings, systems implemented, banking relationships, board MIS
Length1 page; a short objective is fine (see career objective examples)1–2 pages; summary, not objective2 pages; summary with 2–3 headline numbers

Freshers: use the fresher resume format, lead with degree and percentage, add the Tally/GST course, and describe any CA-firm internship with real tasks ("prepared GSTR-3B workings for 12 clients"). From a Tier-2 or Tier-3 college, that internship section matters more than the college name.

Accountant resume keywords by role and industry

Use the exact phrases from the job post where they are true for you; recruiters search Naukri and LinkedIn by these terms and ATS filters match them literally.

Target roleKeywords to include (if true)

How to quantify accounting work

Accountants say "my work has no numbers", which is odd, because the job is numbers. Measure the process, not the balance sheet. Things you can count in almost any accounting role:

Formula: verb + what + scale + result. "Reconciled 340 vendor ledgers monthly; recovered ₹8.4 lakh of duplicate payments" beats "Responsible for vendor reconciliation" in every reading. Without exact figures, use ranges you can defend in an interview.

Accountant resume mistakes that get you rejected

  1. Duties instead of results. "Handling GST, TDS, bank reconciliation, day-to-day accounting" describes every accountant in India. Say what changed because you did it.
  2. Hiding articleship or writing "CA (pursuing)". State the stage and groups. A vague "pursuing" reads as "failed several times and not saying so".
  3. Listing every software you have heard of. If a practical test on SAP would embarrass you, take it off.
  4. Objective paragraphs about "growth-oriented organisations". Replace with a summary naming your industry, tools and one achievement.
  5. Two-column templates with icons and skill bars. They parse into gibberish. Use a single-column layout; the CV format guide explains why.
  6. Personal details block. Father's name, marital status, date of birth and religion belong in a biodata, not a company resume.
  7. Inconsistent number formats. Mixing "Rs. 5,00,000", "5 lakhs" and "₹0.5 Mn" on one page looks careless for someone whose job is accuracy.
  8. No cover note for CA-firm or SME applications. A tight, 150-word cover letter naming the client industries you have audited gets replies.

Frequently asked questions

Should I list Tally as a skill if I have only used it in college?

Yes, but be specific about the version and what you can do in it. "Tally Prime: voucher entry, GST returns, bank reconciliation, stock ledgers" is far more credible than "Tally" alone. If you have only done the practical from a course, say so in the certifications line rather than the skills line so the interviewer is not surprised.

How do I show articleship on my resume if I have not cleared CA Final?

List it as a proper work entry under Experience, with the firm name, dates and 3–4 bullets on the audits, tax filings and clients you handled. In Education, write "CA Intermediate (both groups cleared, Nov 2020)" and, if relevant, "CA Final: attempts pending" or leave Final out. Do not hide articleship inside Education; it is three years of real work.

Is a two-page accountant resume acceptable?

For five or more years of experience, two pages are fine and normal. Freshers and candidates with under three years should stay on one page. What matters is that the first half of page one carries the strongest material: your headline, summary, and the most recent role with quantified bullets.

What is the difference between an accounts executive and a senior accountant on a resume?

An accounts executive resume centres on transaction accuracy: entries, invoices, reconciliations, TDS and GST filings. A senior accountant resume centres on ownership: month-end close, audit coordination, MIS, review of juniors' work and controls you improved. Use the same job titles your appointment letters used; do not inflate them.

How do I mention a career gap after CA attempts?

Add one line in Education or a short note in the summary: "2022–2023: full-time CA Final preparation." Recruiters in India understand exam gaps. What they do not like is an unexplained gap, so name it and move on.
