How the score works

An applicant tracking system does three things with your resume: it extracts the text, files it into fields (name, phone, email, employers, dates, skills), and then lets a recruiter search and rank the pile by keyword. Most rejections at this stage are not about talent; they happen because the extraction failed, a field was not found, or the words the recruiter searched for are not on the page. Our checker mirrors those three steps and adds a fourth that matters in India: personal details that recruiters at private companies do not want to see on a resume and that some applicant systems mis-file.

Keyword match	25	Share of skills, tools and role phrases from the pasted job description that appear in your resume. Without a job description we score your skills section for breadth instead.
India-specific hygiene	15	Date of birth, photo, father's name, marital status, religion or caste, a signed declaration, Aadhaar or passport numbers, a full postal address, and a "Curriculum Vitae" title — expected on a government form, unwanted at a private company.

A score is a diagnostic, not a target. Two resumes can both score 90 and one still lose, because the other used the exact job title the recruiter typed into the search box. Always run the check again with the job description pasted.

The 24 checks, explained

Parseability

Extractable text. If the PDF contains no text layer, every ATS sees a blank page. Export from Word or a builder; never print-and-scan.
Single column. Sidebars made from tables or text boxes are read left-to-right across both columns, which scrambles dates and skills.
Standard headings. Parsers look for Experience, Education, Skills, Projects, Summary. "My journey" or "What I bring" are not recognised.
Email found. A real address, not an image, not inside a header box.
Phone found. A 10-digit Indian mobile, ideally with +91; many parsers fail on numbers written with spaces in odd places.
Dates present and consistent. One format throughout — "Jul 2023 – Present" — not a mix of 07/2023 and July '23.
LinkedIn or portfolio link. Not a parsing requirement, but recruiters search for it and it separates you from mass applicants.

Content quality

Length. Roughly 300–700 words for under eight years' experience; a fresher resume above 600 words is usually padding.
Bullets exist. Paragraph-style experience sections hide achievements and read as job descriptions.
Action verbs. Bullets that start with "Responsible for" or "Worked on" describe the job, not you.
Quantified impact. At least a third of bullets should carry a number: ₹, %, count, time saved, users served.
No first person. "I", "me", "my" are never used on a resume.
No clichés. "Hard-working team player with excellent communication skills" is on a million resumes and says nothing.
Bullet length. Anything over 35 words is two bullets or one that needs cutting.
Summary present. Two or three lines at the top that name the role and your strongest proof point.
Skills section. A dedicated, keyword-dense block; this is where a recruiter search lands.

Keyword match

Job description coverage. We extract skills, tools, certifications and role phrases from the posting and check each against your text with word-boundary matching (so "Java" does not match "JavaScript").
Missing keywords list. Shown as chips; add the ones you can defend to your skills line or a bullet.

India-specific hygiene

Date of birth / age. Not needed for private employers; some systems treat it as a red flag for bias.
Photo. Required for government forms and some Gulf employers, unwanted in Indian private companies and product startups.
Father's name, marital status, religion, caste, nationality. Biodata fields, not resume fields.
Declaration. "I hereby declare that the above information is true…" with date, place and signature belongs on a government or college form.
ID numbers and full address. Aadhaar, PAN and passport numbers are a privacy risk; city and state are enough.
"Curriculum Vitae" / "Resume" title. The parser wants your name at the top, not a label.

Choosing "Government / PSU / bank form" in the tool switches these checks off, because those forms require the fields. Choosing "Job abroad" keeps them off for photo and nationality only, since some countries expect them.

What to do with your result

Clear every "Fix first" item. These are extraction and field failures; each one can make the resume invisible regardless of your experience.
Paste the actual job description and re-run. Add missing keywords you can defend in an interview — to the skills block first, then to a bullet where you used the skill.
Rewrite the weakest bullets. Use the formula action verb + what you did + measurable result. Our how to write a resume guide has ten before-and-after examples.

Frequently asked questions

Is this ATS checker really free and private?

Yes. The checks run entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your resume text and PDF are never sent to our server, and you do not need to sign up. Close the tab and nothing is kept.

What does the ATS score measure?

Four things: whether a parser can read the file and find your contact details and standard sections; content quality such as quantified, action-led bullets and a sensible length; how many keywords from the job description you pasted appear in the resume; and India-specific hygiene such as leaving out date of birth, photo, father's name, marital status and a signed declaration for private-company applications.

Is a score of 80 good?

Scores from different tools are not comparable, so treat ours as a fix list rather than a grade. Above 80 usually means the resume parses cleanly and the basics are in place; the remaining points are almost always keyword coverage for the specific job, which you fix by tailoring.

Why does my two-column resume score low?

When we extract text from your PDF we look at whether lines are split across two columns. Parsers read left to right, so a sidebar built with tables or text boxes can be read out of order, putting your dates on the wrong job or dropping your skills. Use a single-column layout for portal uploads and mass drives.

Does the checker upload my PDF anywhere?

No. The PDF is read by an open-source library (PDF.js) inside your browser. Only your device sees the file. If you use the job-description match, that text also stays on your device.

How do I fix the issues it finds?
